Scientific Interest

Cleomedes is a large impact crater in the Moon’s northeastern region, north of Mare Crisium. About 126 km in diameter, it is a walled plain crater with a broad, rugged rim and a relatively flat floor. Its heavily eroded walls suggest it dates back to the Nectarian period, over 3.92 billion years ago.

The crater floor features rilles, indicating past volcanic or tectonic activity, and a central peak formed by crustal rebound after impact. Smaller craters, like Cleomedes B and J, are scattered across the floor, reflecting later impacts.

Cleomedes also shows signs of lava flooding, especially in its smoother southwestern section, resembling basaltic deposits in nearby lunar maria. These features make it a key site for studying lunar geological history.

Formation

The Cleomedes crater formed through a massive impact event during the Nectarian period, over 3.92 billion years ago. A large asteroid or comet struck the Moon’s surface with immense force, creating a deep, circular depression and ejecting material across the surrounding terrain. The impact also generated intense heat, partially melting the lunar crust and forming the crater’s rugged rim and central peak complex through the rebound effect.

Over time, subsequent smaller impacts and lunar geological processes further shaped Cleomedes. Lava flooding, likely from ancient volcanic activity, smoothed parts of the crater floor, especially in the southwestern region. Additionally, the presence of rilles and smaller secondary craters suggests a long history of tectonic shifts and later impacts, continuously modifying its landscape.
