FAQs
You have questons, we have answers. Let us help you navigate through common queries.
What is the terrain made of?
Xterra Frames are crafted using materials intentionally selected to match each scale of artwork—ensuring exceptional detail, structural integrity, and long-term durability while also reducing unnecessary weight and shipping complexity.
Small Xterra Frames (6×6 and 12×12 inches)
These pieces are fabricated using a cast composite of gypsum and resin. This material is chosen for its ability to capture exceptionally fine surface detail while providing added strength and dimensional stability, helping ensure the artwork is not easily broken at smaller scales. Gypsum–resin composites are commonly used in museum artifacts, architectural models, and archival display works where precision and longevity are essential.
Large Xterra Frames (24×24 inches and larger)
Larger Xterra Frames are produced from High-Density Urethane (HDU) foam, a professional-grade polyurethane material widely used in signage, prototyping, artistic carving, and marine and architectural applications. HDU foam offers excellent structural integrity at a significantly reduced weight, allowing complex terrain to be presented accurately at larger scales while remaining practical for display, transport, and installation.
Material Selection Philosophy
The Xterra team carefully selects the appropriate material for each size and format to ensure every piece maintains its precision, visual presence, and longevity over time. By pairing scale with the right substrate, we are able to reduce overall weight, minimize the risk of damage during handling, and control shipping costs—without compromising detail, craftsmanship, or museum-grade quality.
Each Xterra Frame is engineered not only as a work of art, but as a durable, display-ready object designed to move safely from our studio to your space.
