Wall Mounting Guide

We want to ensure that your frames are securely and beautifully mounted on your walls. Follow these suggestions for a successful installation:

We recommend hanging a picture at eye level. The average person’s line of sight is 60" above the ground. This is where you want the center of your picture to sit.

Leave at least 6" – 8" inches of space between the top of the sofa and the bottom of the picture. To keep the art proportionate to the sofa, its width should span no more than two-thirds of your sofa’s total length.

Wall art looks best when it is wider than the fireplace opening but doesn't extend past the mantel.

Making a gallery with more than one picture? You can opt for a uniform look with pictures of the same size placed equidistant from each other. You can also try a more creative approach by placing pictures of different sizes together. For the latter, envision the placement of all the smaller prints as one large picture. This will help your eye see any inconsistencies or gaps. Start with the largest print and arrange the smaller prints around it. With both options, allow at least 2" of space between each piece of art and aim to have your gallery’s center roughly 60" from the ground. Having trouble creating cohesiveness? Try uniform frames, monochromatic prints, or a gallery of solely architectural elements!

Choose Location and Height

Mounting decor on the wall requires a little bit of planning. Save time and reduce stress by thinking ahead before drilling holes in your wall. Start by thinking about where you want to put your Xterra art.

  • Select a place with easy access to power outlets if you choose to purchase an Xterra Frame that will have lights.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, heat and vibrations, and do not place in direct flow of traffic.
  • Select a weight-bearing wall. The wall must be able to safely support at least four times the combined load of the decor.

The optimal viewing height is to center the display at eye level when seated. For most people, this is 60 inches (152cm) above the floor.

Use a Stud Sensor to Locate the Studs

If you’re hanging an Xterra Frame larger than 36×36 inches, it’s recommended to screw the frame into the wall studs for added support. For frames 24×24 and/or weighing less than 25 pounds, you can use drywall anchors to secure the frame to the wall. However, securing the frame to the studs is always the best option for maximum stability.

  • Once you’ve picked an ideal location for hanging your Xterra Frame on the wall, run a stud finder along the top of the paper.
  • Locate the two studs in your wall that will support your Xterra Frame. (Some models are fastened to only one stud.)
  • Mark the location of each stud’s center with a pencil. Use a nail to confirm a stud has been located.

Tip: If mounting an Xterra Frame to a wall made of brick, you won’t need to find studs. Instead, use masonry anchors when fastening the frame to the wall.

Make a Rough Estimate Where you Want your Xterra Frame

Let’s get a rough estimate where we want this Xterra Frame to be on the wall.

  • Hold the Xterra frame up against the wall and lightly mark in pencil where the corners of the Xterra Frame will be, then remove the frame from the wall.
  • Using a pencil, mark the location of the studs by drawing small dots above your frame over the hidden studs within the wall.

Use Masking Tape to 'Draw" the Top Line of the Xterra Frame

We used pencil marks for a reason! This step will ensure we get the Xterra Frame level on the wall.

  • Tear off a piece of masking tape longer than the width of the Xterra Frame yiou wish to mount.
  • Place the tape on the wall in the general location where you placed your frame. Try and make the tape as level as possible ensuring the center mark is at the very top of the frame.

Use Torpedo Level to Adjust the Masking Tape and Pencil Marks

Using a level, adjust the tape to match the level line indicated on the tool.

  • Place the level at the center mark and adjust the tape on the wall to match the level indicator. This step is critical to ensure your Xterra Frame is mounted properly in the following steps. A slight error at this step may be very challenging to fix in the following steps.
  • Using a pencil, gently erase the inital pencil marks you placed on the wall and redraw the dots over the studs on the level line. It is very important to still place these dots over the studs hidden behind the walls to ensure your decor doesn’t fall off the wall and become damaged.

Place Screws Into the Wall

Using a power drill, insert screws into the wall at indicated locations.  We recommend using construction grade screws at least 2 inches (5cm) long.

Hang Your Xterra Frame and Confirm Level

Using a level to confirm the Xterra Freame has been placed onto the wall properly. If your Xterra Frame is off slightly, go back to previous steps to ensure your screws are level before placing your art on the wall.
